Handy Seafood’s Chesapeake Bay Oyster Season has Arrived

It’s oyster season once again here on the Chesapeake Bay and Handy Seafood is ready for another great season. “Thanks to extensive restoration efforts the bay seems to be growing heartier and more robust every year”, stated Jeff Middleton, Director of Operations at the Handy Plant in Crisfield, MD.

Chesapeake Bay oysters have a consistent salty flavor profile with a sweet finish. They are harvested at the “Sweet Spot of the Bay” where Atlantic seawater mixes with fresh water tributaries. The harvest locations are at South of Cove Point (known as the “Heart of the Chesapeake”), Wicomico River  (Native American for “Place where houses built”), Pocomoke Sound (Native American for “Broken Ground River”) and Tangier Sound (John Smith named Tangier and the surrounding islands the "Russel Isles" after the doctor on board his ship).

Handy partners with local watermen to recycle oyster shells which is necessary for restoration of oyster reefs and sustainability of oysters in the bay. Chesapeake Bay oysters are rated “Best Choice” for sustainable seafood by Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch.

Handy offers a full line of oyster products to wholesalers, restaurants and retailers. The product line includes whole, shucked, half-shell, pillow pack and breaded oysters.
