Handy’s production facility in Crisfield, MD

Handy Seafood earned grade A at its Crisfield, MD seafood processing plant following an audit for food safety standards as set by the British Retail Consortium (BRC). The BRC standard is certified by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI).

Todd Conway, Handy Seafood’s President & COO, explains the company’s rationale in seeking the certification. “Globally recognized certification such as BRC, especially a BRC “A”, helps us to ensure our food safety practices are meeting the best possible standards and provide valuable third party recognition of our commitment to our customers. Crisfield is our third value-added food plant to receive the BRC “A” rating.”

BRC has been recognized internationally as the leader in food safety certification, and has certified over 18,000 suppliers in over 100 countries around the globe. It was also the first Food Safety Standard to be benchmarked by the Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI). The BRC food safety standard is designed to provide the basis for certification for food manufacturers who implement good manufacturing practices and have supporting quality management systems.

“The achievement of the “A” rating is a testament to the high standards of our employees and commitment we all have to providing the best quality products in our industry as well as the cleanliness and good manufacturing practices in our facility”, states Todd Conway. “Our BRC certification and rating exemplifies Handy’s long-standing commitment to food safety and product excellence. We are very proud of this accomplishment and what it indicates to our customers.”
