Handy International Attempts to Beat
Their Own World’s Largest Crab Cake Record
Salisbury, Maryland – 17 July, 2012
Most record holders are not content to rest on their laurels and Handy International–a 100+-year-old Maryland seafood processor–is no exception. Handy’s attempt to break their current Guinness World Records® largest crab cake will take place—
• Saturday, September 1, 2012. (Rain date: Sunday, September 2, 2012)
• Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Maryland
• Proceeds to benefit the Maryland 4-H Foundation
Handy first set the record for largest crab cake in 2006 and then broke that record in 2009 with a 253-pound crab cake at the Honfest in Hampden, Maryland. That crab cake was cooked in a specially-built pan that weighed almost as much as the ingredients themselves, took 9 hours to cook and required 4 men to lift! It was officially recognized by the Guinness World Records® as the largest crab cake. The crowd was impressed as much by its quality as its size. Over 700 crab cake sandwiches were served from that giant crab cake. Proceeds benefited the Special Olympics of Maryland.
For Handy’s upcoming record-breaking attempt, the pan has been modified to hold a larger cake. The special recipe will be produced in Handy’s Crisfield, Maryland, plant and will be transported to the fairgrounds along with the giant pan. Handy will use a certified scale to weigh the cake both before and after cooking.
Jim Cupp, the Handy Sales Representative spearheading this attempt stated, “It will be necessary to flip this cake every 15-20 minutes to allow for even cooking and it will require about 10 hours to cook.” The plan is to start cooking as early as 2:00 a.m. on Saturday in order to be ready for a ravenous lunchtime crowd. As in years past, once the cake is ready, it will be scooped up and made into sandwiches. “Everyone is excited to see how many sandwiches this colossal crab cake yields” said Andy Cashman of the Maryland State Fair.
Handy International is a family-owned company and is America’s oldest seafood processor. Products include soft crabs, crab meat, crab cakes, crab specialty items, oysters and artisanal fish.
